“The most recent case of me allowing hype into my life was for Dune, the sci-fi classic written in 1968 by Frank Herbert. Ever since I was little, I had heard of this book being the best of the best, revolutionizing science fiction and setting the standard for the genre going forward. I finally got around to reading it a month or two ago, and — you guessed it — I thought it sucked. Long and boring, hard to understand at points, characters that lacked any depth, an anti-climactic ending — it was no good from start to finish.
